Kyuki mujhme bhi ek jaan hai (Title of Poem)

Mein bhi shwaas leti hu,

Har sukh dukh ko sehti hu,

Mera bhi man komal hai,

Mamta ka ek aanchal hai,

Fir kyu mera shoshan hota,

Adhikar chhinta, man khota,

Mera bhi swabhimaan hai,

Kyuki mujhme bhi ek jaan hai.

Kisi ki maa, kisi ki patni,

Kisi ki behan, beti hu main,

Hariyali kisi aangan ki,

Ghar ki ek jyoti hu main,

Hai mujhme bhi samvednaye, ‘

Bhavnaae hai, sangyaan hai,

Kyuki mujhme bhi ek jaan hai.

-Prachi Sahu (Poetess)

Meaning of the Poem:

Prachi has expressed the pain faced by women in India because of their gender. In her poetry she questions the discrimination of women in the Indian society in the voice of a girl. The title of the poem – “Kyuki mujh mein bhi ek jaan hai” – “Because I also have a life within me” forces the readers to think about issues such as female genocide and other crimes against women.

English Translation

Because I too have a life within me (Title of Poem)

I also breathe,

Tolerate all happiness and grief,

My heart is also tender,

I have a blanket of motherhood,

Then why I am I abused,

I am devoid of my rights, my peace of mind is disturbed,

I also have a self-respect,

Because I too have a life within me.

I am somebody’s mother, somebody’s wife,

I am somebody’s sister and somebody’s daughter,

I am the prosperity of somebody’s house,

I am a part of the house,

I also have empathy, ‘

I also have emotions and cognizance,

Because I too have a life within me.

English Translation:

Main janam loo bhi ki nahin (Should I take birth or not?) (Title of the Poem)
Main kya pehnu (What should I wear)
(So that you do not have a bad eye on my body)
Main kis samay ghar se niklu (At what time should I leave my home)
(So that we do not cross paths with each other)
Main kis tarha chalu (How should I walk)
Ki meri chaal tujhe nyauta na lage? (So that you do not find my gait inviting for abuse)
Main kaise bolu (How should I speak)
Jo tera khoon ka daur sahi disha mein bahe? (So that you spend your energy in the right manner)
Main janam lu bhi ki nahi (Should I take birth or not)
Main tujhe behla diya (It was I who distracted you)
Kabhi tu baad mein kahe (You may bring this later sometime as an excuse)
Main ye sawal puchne bachungi hi nahi (I will not survive to ask these questions)
Jo shoshan ke baad (If after abuse)
Tere hath tel aur machis aa lage (If you get access to oil and matchstick)
